The Source Within - Finding Happiness Despite Circumstances

Tick, tock, tick, tock... The clock is winding down to the joyous day we all know and love called Christmas. The day where love, happiness and joy are plentiful and the world couldn’t seem better. As adults, isn’t that what we all want to believe? Christmas day seems to have a special magic in it that can bring out the best in people, which makes the world a happier place. Although it’s hard to ignore that the holiday season can also bring a hoard of unpleasant emotions that can lead people down a dark blue hole where joy and happiness do not exist.

The dark skies, and slow days, the financial strain, the hustle and bustle in busy malls, the traffic jams, and short tempers; or the fact you’re finally going to have to see Auntie Milly, who you’ve been avoiding most of the year. It all plays a part in what some call seasonal depression.

I just recognize it as a period where many are forced to sit within themselves and self-reflect where they are in life. It’s a time where people need to reach down inside themselves to bring out patience, to draw on faith, and wash out fear. Just thinking of the mental strain makes me wish I was a hibernating bear sometimes.

Circumstances often dictate our emotions and the way we perceive life. It’s difficult to find happiness when you are surrounded by chaos and stress. I’ll be the first to admit, it is something I have struggled with at times throughout the years. Fortunately through the school of hard knocks I’ve learned it’s all about controlling the source within.

The source within is a powerful tool you can activate at will. It’s the same source that pushes you up out of the bed each morning when the alarm clock sounds. It’s the same source that pushes you to accomplish goals and overcome daily life. It’s the source that allows the weak to accomplish great things in moments of dire need. It’s the source that makes you strong in times of trouble, but most importantly, it’s this same source that is our happiness.

If you woke up tomorrow and had no one to talk to and nothing to do what would you do? Would you sit around moping or would you find ways to entertain yourself so that you could feel better? Sure it would be easy to sit around being impatient and irritable, waiting for someone or something to make you happy, but what if that wasn’t an option? What if you only had yourself…? Could you make yourself happy? Would you find things that you enjoyed doing? Most would eventually wear down and make the decision to find happiness in their current circumstance out of survival. You would brainstorm ways to find happiness; you’d find a comfortable routine to make you feel structure. You’d find something useful to do with your time that you enjoyed doing. You’d actively be choosing to not allow your circumstances determine your happiness.

Why then do so many chose to sit in misery over things they cannot control? Who cares if Auntie Milly is looking at you with disapproving eyes, decide beforehand that you are happy regardless. If you get stuck in a long line, instead of being stressed about the waste of time, choose to replay happy memories in your head and not stressing yourself over how late dinner is going to be. Maybe your Christmas fund isn’t as large as you’d like it to be, find ways to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit regardless. So what, you didn’t get the gift you were hoping for, understand that no material thing will ever bring you everlasting happiness. Everlasting happiness can only come from your source within – the one that says my circumstances do not dictate how I feel because I decided to be happy.

Enjoy your time with family, because that is the most important thing. Merry Christmas!
